Trickster Nation is a new performance exploring the relationship between diaspora, nationalism, and myth through the impossible proposition of a nation-state founded by tricksters. Combining original text, extended vocal techniques, movement, and a large-scale textile installation, the work draws on the Babylonian Talmud, historical trickster figures, and narratives of nation-building to create a serio-comic world in which the desire for political unity is continually unraveled by contradiction, humor, and boundary-crossing. Building on my previous research into Jewish diasporic cultural practices, the project asks how identities are imagined into existence and what forms of belonging might emerge beyond ethnic purity and the logic of the nation-state. Through a collective, interdisciplinary creation process, the performance celebrates hybridity, contamination, and collaboration as alternatives to nationalist fantasies of coherence.
