What is Talk Flock?

Talk Flock is a bi-weekly-ish series of online talks - a living room salon without the living room.  Every two weeks or so, we invite two talkers to give 10-minute talks on topics of their choosing, after which we open up for general discussion.  The vibe is casual, but engaged - it’s fun to see how different ways of thinking and speaking interact, to find the connections between, say, astrology and abolition.

It was started by Jerry Lieblich and Anna Lublina back in June 2020.  We had a desire to explore online gathering, to see how, if we’re going to be isolated for this long, we can make a space that felt like togetherness.  In doing so, we wanted to ask - what is this digital form?  What are its contours, its possibilities?  What we craved was a space for encounter, a place to meet unfamiliar people, think about unfamiliar things.

We wanted, too, to make this space outside the confines of institutions.  One of the great benefits of Zoom, to us, is the fact that it’s very accessible - the means of production sit right in our hands.  So, as if on public access television, we could simply declare ourselves the hosts of a show, and it would be so.  Avoiding the permissions and systems of expertise normally involved in such a thing feels good, like training for a world we want to be in.  It’s also fun.

After a few months of gatherings, we’ve started to invite previous talkers to host and curate.  This is an attempt to decentralize the power structure of the series, a kind of flocking.  To learn a little more, and watch recordings of previous gatherings, check out our previous recordings:
